Garden lights, in-ground up-lighters, flood lights and path bollards from KES 2,200. A well-lit compound is safer, more beautiful and worth more, but outdoor lighting is also the category most likely to fail if the wrong fittings are chosen.
Three Categories
Outdoor lighting is not a single category, it is three distinct tools used together. Understanding what each does is the starting point for a scheme that works rather than one that just adds fittings.
The principle is the same as interior layered lighting: ambient (flood), accent (in-ground and garden spike) and guidance (path and bollard). A compound with all three layers reads as designed. One with only flood lights looks like a car park.

IP Ratings, what to insist on
Applications
Outdoor lighting decisions are driven by what the space does, not by aesthetics alone. Each zone has a different primary requirement.

Flanking in-ground or flood
The driveway entrance sets the tone for the entire compound at night. In-ground up-lighters flanking the gate columns create a formal, architectural arrival, the columns become features rather than gateposts. Supplement with path bollards along the driveway edge to guide vehicles safely. For security, add a pair of PIR-triggered flood lights angled to cover the turning circle.

Spike lights + in-ground for trees
A garden that disappears at night is a wasted investment. Garden spike lights placed behind plants cast them forward visually, creating depth and silhouette. For specimen trees, a single in-ground up-lighter at the base throws the full canopy into relief. The rule: light the plants from below and in front, never from above, which flattens them. Use warm white (2700 K) throughout to keep the garden atmospheric rather than clinical.

Flood lights + PIR sensors
Façade flood lighting does two jobs: it makes the building look intentional and imposing at night, and it eliminates dark zones that compromise security. Mount flood lights at high points (under eaves or on compound walls) angled down and outward. PIR sensors mean the lights are off except when triggered, lower electricity cost and higher deterrence impact when they do activate.

Low-level · Safety-first
Steps and level changes are the highest-risk lighting points in a garden. The light must fall on the nosing of each step, the leading edge, not from above where it creates glare without illuminating the tread. Recessed step lights on the riser face or low bollards to the side are both effective. For long garden paths, a light every 2–3 m maintains guidance without a lit-runway effect.

In-ground and garden lights require conduit laid below finished grade, ideally done before paving and planting. Retrofitting conduit into a finished garden means cutting through paving or laying surface conduit, both of which compromise the result.
The minimum underground cable is 2.5 mm² armoured (SWA) rated for direct burial, standard flex cable used indoors will degrade within a year in the soil. Run conduit loops rather than radial spurs so individual fittings can be replaced without disturbing the whole circuit.
For properties still in construction, run at least two additional empty conduits beyond what you need now, outdoor lighting requirements always grow as landscaping matures.

What to Budget
Garden spike lights are the most affordable entry point. In-ground up-lighters carry a premium because of the IP67 rating and the stainless steel housing required to resist ground moisture and corrosion over years.
Budget separately for installation, armoured cable, conduit, junction boxes and a qualified electrician. Installation typically costs 30–50% of the fitting cost on new compounds where conduit is being laid during construction.
Common Questions
IP65 is the minimum for exposed fittings — rain and dust proof. In-ground up-lighters that sit in paving or lawn need IP67 for submersion tolerance. Use IP68 for pool edges and water features.
In-ground up-lighters are recessed flush with paving or soil so the fixture is invisible by day — best for uplighting trees, columns and sculpture permanently. Spike lights push into soil and can be repositioned as the garden changes, so they suit beds and feature plants.
In-ground up-lighters flanking the gate columns turn the pillars into features and create a formal arrival. Add path bollards along the driveway edge for vehicle guidance, and a pair of PIR-triggered floodlights covering the turning circle for security.

Garden spike lights start around KES 2,200 and floodlights from KES 2,800. In-ground up-lighters run KES 3,200–8,500, path and bollard lights KES 3,500–9,000. Wiring and weatherproof driver enclosures are quoted with the installation.
