Kitchen
Lighting

From KES 450. A kitchen needs light where you actually work - the worktop and the island - not just an even wash from the ceiling.

The Core Idea

Light the work,
not just the room.

A ceiling downlight sits behind you while you work at the counter, so your own body casts a shadow exactly where you're chopping. It's the most common kitchen lighting mistake, and the easiest one to fix.

Under-cabinet strips solve the worktop, pendants define the island, and downlights fill in the rest of the ceiling. All three together, not any one alone.

Under-Cabinet Strip Lighting

Layer 01

Under-Cabinet Strip Lighting

From KES 450

Mounted beneath the upper cabinets, an LED strip lights the worktop directly with no shadow from your own body - the single biggest lighting upgrade for the actual work of cooking. Choose a neutral 4000K strip for accurate colour when prepping food.

Island & Peninsula Pendants

Island & Peninsula Pendants

From KES 3,500

An island or peninsula earns its own pendant lighting rather than relying on the ceiling grid above it. Hang fixtures 75-85cm above the worktop, spaced evenly along the island's length, for both task light and a visual anchor for the room.

Anti-Glare Recessed Downlights

Anti-Glare Recessed Downlights

KES 1,050 – 1,950

General ceiling coverage across the rest of the kitchen - sink, stove and floor space - comes from recessed downlights. An anti-glare reflector keeps the light comfortable to work under even directly beneath the fitting.

Under-cabinet strips are the best-value upgrade on this page - a small spend that changes how the worktop actually functions day to day.

Common Questions

Kitchen lighting FAQ

Ceiling downlights sit behind you while you work at the counter, so your own body casts a shadow across the worktop - exactly where you're chopping or reading a recipe. Under-cabinet LED strips mount above the counter itself, lighting the work surface directly with no shadow.

Neutral to cool white, 4000-5000K, is standard for kitchens - it keeps you alert and renders food colours accurately, unlike the warm 2700K tone suited to living rooms and bedrooms.

As a rough guide, space anti-glare recessed downlights 1-1.2m apart across the ceiling, keeping them clear of upper cabinet lines so they don't create shadows on the counter below. An island or peninsula usually gets its own pendant lighting rather than relying on the ceiling grid.

Hang pendants 75-85cm above the island worktop - high enough not to block sightlines across the kitchen, low enough to feel intentional. For a run of two or three pendants, space them evenly along the island's length.

Under-cabinet LED strip kits start from about KES 450 per fixture. Anti-glare recessed downlights run from roughly KES 1,050 to KES 1,950 depending on beam control. Island pendants start from around KES 3,500 each, more for statement glass or linear designs.
