62+ models from KES 4,800. Six style families, each with its own character, its own ceiling requirements and its own ideal room. This guide helps you find the right one.

Why It Matters

A chandelier doesn't merely illuminate, it anchors a space

The right chandelier commands attention, sets the emotional temperature of a room and tells visitors something about the people who live there. Choose wrong and you'll notice it every day, a fixture that's too small for the ceiling, too ornate for the architecture, or simply the wrong style for the mood you're trying to create.

The two decisions that matter most: ceiling height (which determines the suspension length and fixture scale) and room function (which determines the light quality and style character). Everything else follows from those two.

First Decision

What is your ceiling height?

Ceiling height is the single most important variable in chandelier selection. It determines how long the suspension should be, how large the fixture can be, and which styles are even appropriate.

Standard Ceiling

2.7 – 3 m

The standard ceiling height in most Nairobi apartments and houses. Here, the chandelier must be compact, choose designs with minimal suspension (30-60 cm drop maximum) and a shallow body that keeps the room comfortable.

  • Maintain 2.1 m floor clearance at minimum
  • Compact contemporary, glass and mid-century styles work best
  • Avoid multi-tier vintage designs, they need height to breathe

Double Volume

4 m and above

Grand entrances, open stairwells and double-volume living rooms need long-drop chandeliers built for the scale. Size generously, a fixture that looks impressive in a catalogue can feel like a pendant lamp once installed in a 5 m ceiling.

  • Suspension chains of 1.5–3 m are typical
  • Multi-tier vintage and crystal cascade styles are purpose-built for this
  • Professional installation is essential, leverage on the ceiling anchor is significant

The Formula

Size any chandelier in 60 seconds

Use the formula for the fixture diameter, then check the hanging height. Dining tables follow their own clearance rule.

Example

4 m + 5 m = 90 cm

01

Measure the room

Take the room width and length in metres. For a 4 m by 5 m room, the starting number is 9.

02

Convert to diameter

Use that number as centimetres. A 9 m total room dimension points to a 90 cm chandelier.

03

Check floor clearance

The lowest point of the chandelier should stay at least 2.1 m above the floor in walk-through areas.

04

Adjust for tables

Over dining tables, hang the fitting 75-85 cm above the tabletop and keep it near two-thirds of the table length.

Dining Room

Hang 75–85 cm above the table surface. The chandelier should span roughly two-thirds of the table length, close enough to create intimacy, high enough that guests across the table can see each other. Linear and rectangular designs suit the long tables most dining rooms use.

Common Questions

Chandelier FAQ

What size chandelier do I need for my room?+

Add the room width and length in metres, then read that figure as centimetres — that is the ideal fixture diameter. A 4 m by 5 m room suits roughly a 90 cm chandelier. Over a dining table, size the fixture to about two-thirds of the table length instead.

How high should a chandelier hang?+

In a walk-through area keep the lowest point at least 2.1 m above the floor. Over a dining table, hang it 75–85 cm above the tabletop regardless of ceiling height — the extra ceiling space is taken up by the chain or rod.

Can I put a chandelier on a standard 2.7–3 m ceiling?+

Yes, but choose a compact design with a short drop (30–60 cm) or a semi-flush fixture that sits close to the ceiling. Multi-tier vintage and long crystal cascades need 4 m or more to look right.

How much does a chandelier cost in Kenya?+

Most dining-room chandeliers sit between KES 13,000 and KES 50,000. Compact modern fixtures start around KES 4,800; large vintage, crystal and double-volume pieces run from KES 45,000 to KES 127,000 and above. Installation is quoted separately where ceiling height or reinforcement is involved.

Are chandeliers dimmable?+

Most are, when paired with dimmable bulbs and a compatible Triac dimmer. E27, E14 and GU10 sockets all take dimmable LED bulbs. Integrated-LED chandeliers often include tricolor switching for warm, neutral and cool white from the wall switch.
