Design Guide
Grand drops for stairwells, entrances and double-volume living rooms, spaces with 4 metres of ceiling height and above. Scale, suspension and style decisions are entirely different from standard rooms.

Scale is everything
A chandelier that looks large in a catalogue can feel like a pendant lamp in a 5 m ceiling
Why This Space Is Different
Double volume describes any interior space where the ceiling spans two full storeys of height, typically 4 to 6 metres. These are the grand entrances, open stairwells and showpiece living rooms that define certain types of Nairobi homes, particularly in Karen, Runda and Muthaiga.
The standard chandelier sizing formula, room width + length in metres = diameter in cm, still applies, but the result must be sized up by 20–30% to account for the visual weight that extra ceiling height demands. A fixture that looks proportionate in a showroom ceiling at 3 m will look undersized at 5 m.
Equally important: the suspension chain. A standard chandelier on a 40 cm drop becomes a ceiling rose with ambitions. Long-drop designs built for double-volume spaces carry 1.5–3 m of chain, not an afterthought but a structural part of the composition.
Space-by-Space Guide
Each double-volume space has its own placement logic. The sizing numbers are starting points, always verify against your specific ceiling height.

1.5–2.5 m
A chandelier that looks grand in a catalogue can appear lost against a 5 m ceiling. The key is to size generously, add 20–30% to whatever the standard room-width formula gives you, and choose a design with vertical presence (tiered, cascading or elongated) to fill the height gracefully.

The entrance chandelier is the first impression, and on the way out, the last. Hang it so the bottom sits at approximately 2.3–2.5 m from the floor: visible from outside when the door opens, at eye level as you step in. Crystal and vintage designs make the most confident impact here.

Stairwells often span two full storeys, measure from the ceiling to a point level with the landing handrail and position the bottom of the fixture just above that mark. Long-chain designs in antique brass or brushed nickel read beautifully from both floors and make the staircase itself a destination.

The hanging height above the table remains the same, 75–85 cm, regardless of ceiling height. The extra ceiling space is filled by the suspension chain. Choose a fixture sized slightly larger than the standard ⅔-of-table-length formula because the extra visual weight of a taller space demands more from the fixture.

Important, Please Read
A 10 kg chandelier on a 2 m suspension chain exerts significant leverage on its ceiling anchor point, the mechanical load is far greater than the simple weight would suggest. The ceiling mounting must be rated for that combined load, and the electrical connection must comply with Kenya's wiring standards.
We provide installation in Nairobi as part of your purchase. Ask us to include it when you order, and we'll send a qualified electrician with the correct fixings for your specific ceiling construction.
Common Questions
Take whatever the standard room-width-plus-length formula gives you and add 20–30%. A fixture that looks large in a catalogue can read as a pendant lamp against a 5 m ceiling, so err generously and choose a design with vertical presence — tiered, cascading or elongated.
For a 4–5 m living room, 1.5–2.5 m of drop is typical, with the bottom of the fixture landing 2.5–2.8 m above the floor. Stairwells spanning two storeys use 3–5 m drops, positioned so the fixture is visible from both floors.
Measure from the ceiling to a point level with the landing handrail and set the bottom of the fixture just above that mark. Long-chain designs in antique brass or brushed nickel read well from both the ground floor and the landing.
Multi-tier vintage and crystal-cascade pieces built for 4 m-plus ceilings run from KES 45,000 to KES 90,000, with the largest statement fixtures reaching KES 127,000 and above. Professional installation is essential and quoted separately.
Yes. The leverage on the ceiling anchor at these drops and weights is significant, and access usually needs scaffolding or a tower. We handle the ceiling reinforcement, rigging and commissioning as part of the fit.
