The System
Light that appears to come from the building itself
LED profiles are the technology behind the lighting effect you see in luxury hotels and architect-designed homes, seamless lines of light emerging from ceilings, skirting and staircases with no visible fitting. Three components work together: the aluminium profile (which shapes and diffuses the light), the LED strip inside it (which provides the source), and a power supply (which drives the strip safely).
The key decision is not which LED strip to use, it's which profile type suits the surface you're working with. Gypsum requires plaster-in profiles. Timber takes recessed profiles. Concrete and masonry use surface profiles. Use the wrong type and the installation will either fail structurally or look amateur.

Where to Use Them
Four high-impact applications
Each application uses a different profile type, installed in a different way. Understanding the application first leads you to the right profile.
Application 01
Gypsum Ceiling Coves
Plaster-in profiles built into gypsum ceiling coffers create the seamless, architect-grade lines you see in luxury hotels. The light appears to come from inside the ceiling, no fitting, no trim, just a clean warm line. Planning note: the profile must be fixed to the framing before the plasterer arrives.

Kitchen Under-Cabinet
Cabinet profiles under wall units cast even, shadow-free light across worktops. The 5 mm slim cabinet profile sits flush under most kitchen unit bases. Add a PIR motion sensor for hands-free activation when you open the cabinet or pass beneath, a detail that makes every other kitchen feel incomplete.
Application 03
Staircase Step Edges
Corner profiles on stair nosings define each step with a thin line of light, a safety detail that also becomes the most architectural element in the house at night. Pair with skirting profiles along the stair wall for continuous low-level wayfinding that works without waking the household.
Application 04
Walk-In Wardrobes
Cabinet profiles inside hanging sections and under shelves produce even, shadow-free illumination that transforms any wardrobe into something boutique. Mount under each shelf horizontally, or vertically between hanging sections. The effect is immediate and the installation is simpler than any other lighting upgrade in the home.

What to Budget
LED profile prices in Kenya
All profiles are 3-metre lengths, joinable end-to-end. Each includes a frosted diffuser cover, end caps and mounting clips. Prices include VAT.
Budget separately for LED strips (from KES 290 / m) and a 24 V power supply (KES 1,990). For a full room of cove lighting, a typical 10 m run might cost KES 14,000–25,000 in materials depending on the profile type and strip quality.

LED profile FAQ
Do LED strips really need an aluminium profile?+
For any visible run, yes. The profile protects the strip, dissipates heat to extend LED life two to three times, and its frosted diffuser turns individual LED dots into a smooth line of light. Without one you see the dots.
What is the difference between plaster-in and recessed profiles?+
Plaster-in (trimless) profiles are for gypsum ceilings — perforated flanges screw to the framing and the surface is skim-coated flush so the light appears to emerge from the architecture. Recessed profiles route into a channel cut in timber or MDF. Never use a recessed profile in gypsum — the joint will crack.
When do I install LED profiles during a build?+
Plaster-in profiles must be fixed to the ceiling framing before the plasterer arrives. Surface and recessed profiles can go in later, but planning the runs, power supply positions and driver locations early saves rework.
Which profile type is best for cove lighting?+
A cornice profile mounted at the wall-ceiling junction, running a COB strip so there are no visible dots. It washes the ceiling with soft indirect light — the classic cove effect. SMD strips are fine behind a diffuser for less critical runs.
How much do LED profiles cost in Kenya?+
Aluminium profiles start at about KES 1,200 per 3 m length for narrow surface channels, rising to KES 2,900 for wide plaster-in and cornice sections. The strip, driver and controller are quoted separately.
